On December 6th, 2024, the country singer Cody Jinx came out with a new album titled Cody Jinks sings Lefty Frizzell. Cody Jinx wanted to make a tribute to Lefty Frizzell since one he is a huge fan but also many of the traditional country singers were influenced by Lefty. For this album Cody Jinx tried to use old instruments and recording techniques to attempt to sound similar to the recording.
If You’ve Got the Money, I’ve Got the Time
This song sounds both period correct but also has a more modern sound or at least better recording abilities than in the past. I am a fan of Cody Jinx so when I heard about this album coming out, I was excited. It also doesn’t help that Lefty is my Great Uncle so it’s always nice hearing those old songs come back to life. I think after hearing this song, however, you must both respect and appreciate Cody Jinks but also admire Lefty for how unique and talented he was at singing. The great thing about this song is that since it’s redone and more modernized it’s going to be easier to learn and play this song out and about.
My Rough and Rowdy Ways
I am actually not that familiar with this song so it’s going to be just new to me. This song sounds like something you will hear on the radio now which is really cool because that makes it timeless. That is the goal of an artist is to create art that is timeless. I love the use of all the instruments because it definitely takes you back to the way they used to write music.
Saginaw, Michigan
This is a super cool song. I have always enjoyed the lyrics of this song. It is very clever and in addition to that I love the guitar work, it is very clean. Cody Jinx really breathes new life into these songs, and I love it!
That’s the Way Love Goes
I am amazed at how well these songs have aged. It’s really too bad Lefty isn’t able to redo is songs with our technology. As good as Cody Jinx is he doesn’t have that Lefty Curl as they say it. Which is really hard to hear in modern country singers. The guitar is so beautiful and melodic in this song.
Always Late (With Your Kisses)
My Dad loves to sing this song around the house. It’s a super fun song for sure that makes light of heartbreak. This has a lot to do of course with the song being upbeat while the lyrics are more sad. The steel is really lovely in this song and follows the singing voice very well. I also love the piano style from this style which Cody Jinx does such a great job with replicating.
She’s Gone, Gone, Gone
The only song that I have heard being sung around the house more than Always Late is Gone, Gone, Gone. This song is very catchy and is forever seared into my mind. I must admit this is also one of my favorite lefty songs, it’s just so fun!
The long Black Veil
This is my favorite Lefty song, so I am excited to hear this one. I just love the story telling of the song, it’s simple but good. It’s kind of like a mystery movie or novel but in song form. I have always loved the chorus to this song and of course the way that Lefty sang the chorus gave me chills.
I never Go Around Mirrors
This is my grandfather and my uncle’s favorite at least from the standpoint that it was Lefty’s most difficult song from a vocal performance. My wife likes to sing this song which is fair because it’s rich in meaning. After listening to this song, a man should really reflect on themselves. I love the chorus because he is saying he can’t stand looking at mirrors anymore because he can’t look at himself anymore.
Sick, Sober and Sorry
This sounds like a theme song for all those who are into outlaw country. Of course, it’s from a simpler time lyrically so it’s not as hardcore as now. It’s also a great song that would have been played in bars for sure from the piano parts to the guitar parts it’s very tavern friendly.
